College Applications
Summer is the most ideal time to prepare for and complete college applications. In this class students will: 1) Review all the components of the applications process including essays, activity lists, and recommendations; 2) Complete a solid draft essay for the Common App and/or UW application; 3) Understand how to prioritize activity lists and write effective activity descriptions within the space constraints of the Common App; 4) Understand the components of writing an effective “Why Us?” essay; and 5) Determine effective uses for the optional essay sections.
Fundamental Math Skills
For many students, the jump from elementary to middle school math is a big one. In this workshop, instructors will make the transition easier by introducing students to concepts such as fractions, decimals, conversations, and percentages. Students will also explore basic number sense, number application, and simple linear relationships. Join LTLS to help your student obtain a stronger understanding of these fundamentals and build a robust foundation for their fall semester.
Algebra
Love it or hate it, algebra is one of the most important building blocks for more advanced mathematics. Students must also prove their algebra proficiency during state testing, ACT, and SAT. Join LTLS to strengthen their understanding of critical algebraic concepts, including: exponents, square roots, rational numbers, fractions, fraction manipulations, and key algebraic terms. We are here to make algebra approachable through this engaging and interactive workshop.
Pre-Calculus
And you thought algebra was hard…! Don’t fear, LTLS is here to help! Join us this summer for a calculus introductory workshop. Students will start with a thorough review of algebra’s key terms and complex concepts, before diving deeper into pertinent pre-calculus topics. These include concepts like the Pythagorean theorem, function evaluation, and trigonometric identities (don’t forget your SOHCAHTOA!). Instructors will guide students to formulate, compute, interpret, and validate intermediate pre-calculus problems.
Middle School Reading and Writing
There is a big leap in the expectations for reading and writing skills from elementary to middle school. If that sounds scary, LTLS is here to help smooth the transition with a fun and intensive reading and writing workshop. The class is designed to help students master their ability to summarize content, identify themes, and translate ideas into essays. Students will draw on inspiration from a wide genre of literature as they are challenged to think critically about content, improve their style, and learn how to establish their voice as an effective writer.
High School Reading and Writing
A mastery of literary skills is critical for success in high school, college, and many careers. Join LTLS for a fun, intensive reading and writing workshop designed to help students find their voice, use sensory details, and explore universal themes in organized, peer-edited essays. Students will be given rich examples of literature and thought-provoking prompts to explore a creative mixture of descriptive, analytical, and critical writing styles.
